In West Antarctica there has been an increase in the accumulation of snow on the top of its glaciers. The annual snow has increased by 30% from the time period of 1990-2000, gaining 16 feet more water than the first 30 years of the study (that spanned 300 years and used ice-core drilling as its tool). This is a result from an intensifying low pressure system that has been over that region and an increase in storms that have been in that area. These storms and the low pressure system have brought warmer water currents to the coast of Antarctica, and both could be exacerbated by climate change. This increased snowfall is not a good thing, but rather a sign of climate change.
This analysis of increased snowfall in Antarctica is extremely important. Certain people may believe that increased snow is a good thing in Antarctica, and may use this to sway people to believe that climate change is not occurring. However, this is not the case, as it is directly caused by climate change and brings warmer and wetter climates to Antarctica that could drastically impact its glaciers, potentially shrinking it.
