No matter the efforts that people make to pass laws and promote policies that protect the environment, there will always be someone to break that law or accidents that happen. Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, has poured money into his foundation, protecting marine life and preventing overfishing. Ironically, his 300ft yacht this month ran over a protected coral reed in the Cayman Islands, destroying 80% of it. While Allen claims to have not been on the yacht at the time, he still will be responsible for the $600,000 fine that comes along with it. This event was extremely embarrassing for Allen, and he and his crew have been aiding the investigation of the damage to the coral reef.
This once again shows that actions speak louder than words. No matter what Allen has done for the environment, it does not excuse the actions of his crew. And this is the same for many other people in power. People often support charities and foundations for publicity, and do not believe in the cause they support. For environmental protection, it is imperative that not only do people support it, but they also wholeheartedly believe in it.
